Suzuki has confirmed the engine details for its new Swift Sport by releasing a teaser video of the upcoming hot hatch before it officially debuts at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show. The video is meant to emphasis the car’s sporting credentials and carry on the tradition of offering a great value-for-money hot hatch.
This is the first time the Swift will sport a turbocharged mill, specifically the 140hp, 1.4-litre Boosterjet engine. The previous two generations of the Swift Sport came with a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol motor. Underpinned by the new Heartect platform, the new hot hatch is expected to carry on the previous-generation car’s characteristics, like the engaging handling, impressive body control, slick manual gearbox, subtle body kit and a low, sub-1,000kg kerb weight.
While we know that the new Swift will debut at the Auto Expo 2018, Maruti has not confirmed whether the hot hatch version will come to India. However, the likelihood of the Swift Sport coming to India with the 1.4-litre motor is high.
There has been a proliferation of performance-oriented hatchbacks in India recently, like the Fiat Abarth Punto, the Volkswagen Polo GTI and Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS. Provided it is priced correctly, Maruti could have another money spinner in this niche segment.
