Audi has started working on an all-new RS5 Avant, which will see a global debut next year. The German brand is rigorously testing the new performance wagon, which can be confirmed with sightings of test mules at multiple locations across Europe.

  1. New RS5 Avant could get more than 450hp of power
  2. Will continue to sit on the MLB platform
  3. Could get an all-electric derivative in future

The new RS5 Avant will kick off Audi Sport's move into electrification. The first plug-in hybrid from Audi Sport will be a successor to today's V6-powered RS4 but will take on a new name in line with Audi’s plan to assign odd numbers to combustion cars and even numbers to EVs. The equivalent electric model, badged RS4 e-tron, is expected to arrive by 2026.

The new RS5, with its new name, will also get new styling inside out. Up front, it gets a large diamond-shaped grille with muscular cuts and creases on the bumpers along with large air intakes. It gets heavily flared arches and multi-spoke sports wheels covering large-diameter drilled and perforated brake discs. There is also a vertical air vent behind the front wheel arch for aerodynamic efficiency, and the front end appears sculpted to optimise engine cooling and airflow. At the back, there are two prominent exhaust tips that are positioned more towards the centre than at the edges.

New Audi RS5 Avant: powertrain, platform highlights

Audi’s upcoming performance family estate is set to retain its 2.9-litre V6 but with the addition of an electric motor that boosts output beyond the current 450hp and 600Nm. The next-generation RS5 Avant will continue to use the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform. However, it will be modified to allow plug-in hybrid versions to accommodate a larger, 14.4kWh battery.

The MLB platform that underpins the new A5 has been upgraded in recent Audi models to include a new electric architecture with 48V capability. Upon debut, the new RS5 Avant will take on the Mercedes-AMG C 63, which has also made the switch to a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and now produces a colossal 680hp and 1020Nm.

While there’s no word on the new RS5 line-up coming to India, the brand does have the current model on sale, in Sportback 4-door coupe.
