Toyota’s Camry has been on sale in India since the introduction of the XV30 back in 2002. Almost a permanent fixture in Toyota’s India line-up, the Camry has been a low volume but consistent seller for the brand over the years. This trend is set to continue with the introduction of the new ninth-generation Camry XV80 that will go on sale in early 2025, according to Toyota insiders.

  1. New Camry continues to sit on the TNGA-K platform
  2. Gets an updated 227hp petrol-hybrid powertrain
  3. Likely to make India debut at Bharat Mobility Show

The new car is likely to be shown to the public at the Bharat Mobility Show and will be assembled in India like its predecessor. The new Camry will once again be available only as a strong hybrid, and backseat comfort, fuel efficiency and dependability will continue to be its main selling propositions.

New Toyota Camry dimensions, exterior design

When it comes to design, the new car is clearly an evolution of the one currently on sale here. The new Camry, however, is marginally longer, but has the same wheelbase as the current one. Toyota’s designers seem to have taken a page from Lexus’ design book. The nose, and especially the chin, has that typical Lexus-like anvil shape, with the new Camry also getting some interesting layering low down. Wide ‘brackets’ on either side also provide plenty of width.

What also looks neat is the narrow slot-like ‘grille’ that runs from headlight to headlight. The use of modern lighting also means the headlight pods are compact, with LED Daytime Running Lights adding plenty of much-needed character. Around the side, Toyota has provided for more defining lines and the large tail-lights at the rear are replaced by ‘C’-shaped units.

New Toyota Camry interior and features

What has also made the Camry popular over the years, especially as a chauffeur-driven car, is the focus on the rear seat. The seat reclines, comes with ventilation, and the control for the blinds and other features are placed in between the seats. Also, since the battery is placed ahead of the rear axle, there isn’t too much of a loss in boot space, which is 427 litres.

The design of the new cabin is neater and classier. Subtle but effective chrome embellishments give the two tone cabin a lift, wireless Apple CarPlay has been integrated onto a larger screen, and the car comes with ADAS features that include dynamic radar cruise control with curve speed reduction, lane departure alert with steering assist, and a pre-collision braking system. You also get safe exit assist as well as a factory-fitted dash cam should you opt for one.

New Toyota Camry powertrain, specs

While the basic mechanical hardware used under the hood is similar, the new Camry gets more power, now up to a combined 227hp from the engine and strong-hybrid system. The new Camry also boasts greater efficiency, a higher 25kpl claimed number, up from 19.1kpl for the current car. This jump in both performance and efficiency stretches the envelope at both ends and could mean a real-world efficiency of over 20kpl in our conditions, which would be amazing for a car of this size.

With no real competition, this large, efficient, and comfortable sedan is sure to attract a fair amount of investigation and interest, despite the expected starting price of Rs 48 lakh.
