Nissan Ariya SUV: what exactly is it?

The Ariya made its global debut in 2020 and has been spied testing in India last year. The SUV has stylish looks that are almost close to the concept that was shown in 2019. The Ariya sits on Renault Nissan Alliance’s CMF-EV electric vehicle architecture, which also underpins the Renault Megane e-Tech electric SUV.

As far as styling goes, the Nissan Ariya features the new ‘design’ shield, and in some markets, it gets an illuminated Nissan logo. It has a distinct coupe-like design with a prominent shoulder line linking the front and rear of the car. The electric SUV sits on either 19-inch or 20-inch wheels, depending on the variant and the market.

The interior is clean and minimalistic. Two large 12.3-inch screens dominate the dashboard that has almost no physical buttons. Most of the functions are controlled by a unique haptic control setup. The higher variants also get a heads-up display as standard along with a Bose audio setup.

Globally, the Ariya comes with both single-motor, rear-wheel-drive and twin-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrains and two battery pack options: 63kWh and 87kWh. The 63kWh battery pack makes 217hp and 300Nm of torque and has a claimed range of 402km. The 87kWh model makes 242hp and 300Nm and has a claimed range of up to 529km. The top-spec 87kWh Ariya makes 306hp and 600Nm of torque while offering a claimed range of up to 513km.

As far as tech goes, the Ariya has advanced driver assistance features, including an enhanced iteration of Nissan’s ProPilot system. Tested in 2022, the Ariya was awarded a full five-star crash-test rating by Euro NCAP.

Nissan Ariya SUV: India launch details

The Ariya SUV will most likely sit at the top end of the Japanese brand’s India line-up. Being a contender in the niche high-end SUV market, the Ariya will be sold in limited numbers, and we were told that the first batch of some units has already been imported. Expect more details on the Ariya to surface in the coming months. Nissan is currently gearing up to launch the X-Trail SUV, which will go on sale on August 1 here.
