Polestar was originally Volvo’s performance sub-brand in the same way as BMW’s M brand or Mercedes’ AMG. After announcing that it would be a standalone manufacturer, Polestar has now teased a new coupe model ahead of its debut on October 17, 2017.

The teaser images, posted on Polestar’s official Instagram page, give very little away but the typically Volvo-like tail-lamps have been confirmed. The design looks to be influenced by the Volvo Concept Coupe plug-in hybrid that debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show. The hybrid concept was designed by Polestar boss and then-Volvo chief of design Thomas Ingenlath, and boasted 400hp and 600Nm of torque.

The Swedish brand has not confirmed whether this will be a production-spec model or a concept.

However, our sister publication Autocar UK had discovered that Polestar’s first model as an independent brand will be a 600hp hybrid coupe due in 2018, which is expected to be based on the Volvo S60’s Scalable Product Architecture.

The hybrid powertain is expected to be borrowed from the XC90 T8, which means a 2.0-litre turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor with output exceeding the T8’s 407hp and 640Nm of peak torque.
