  • Cayman GT4 priced at Rs 1.63 crore; 718 Spyder at Rs 1.59 crore (ex-showroom, India)

What’s powering the top-spec Porsche 718s?

Both, the Cayman GT4 and the Spyder, are powered by a 4.0-litre, naturally aspirated, flat-six engine that puts out 420hp and 420Nm of peak torque. Both models come with only a 6-speed manual; no PDK here, and this translates to a 0-100kph dash in 4.4sec, whichever one you choose, with the Spyder managing a top speed of 301kph and the GT4 topping out at 303kph.

What’s under the skin of the Cayman GT4 and Spyder?

The 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder both feature the same chassis, worked on by Porsche’s GT division, underneath. They also feature race-inspired springs and struts at their front and rear axles, along with Porsche’s Active Suspension Management damping system that’s 30mm lower than standard variants. It’s claimed to be “specifically designed for use on the racetrack”.

The Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system is tweaked to be less obtrusive, and an improved torque-vectoring system is also part of the package. Both, again, have the option of ceramic brakes, along with the standard track-focused caliper system. The 718 Spyder also uses the same Porsche-specific Michelin-made high-performance tyres as the GT4.

Porsche claims the alterations and extra power enable the Cayman GT4 to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife more than 10sec quicker than its predecessor.

What are the 718 Cayman GT4 and Spyder’s interiors like?

The Porsche GT4 and Spyder’s cabins don’t stray too far off the standard 718 models, although there is a lot more racy Alcantara all over. The GT4 features fabric door-pulls in place of traditional handles, body-coloured seat belts and the removal of the infotainment system, which can be reinstalled as a no-cost option. The Spyder, on the other hand, appears to retain standard door handles and its infotainment system.

Porsche also offers the 718 Cayman GT4 with the option of a Clubsport package, which includes a steel roll bar at the rear of the cabin, a small fire extinguisher and a six-point seatbelt for the driver’s side.

Porsche 718 rivals

The high-performance 718 Cayman GT4 and Spyder have no direct rivals in India. The performance twins join the ‘regular’ 718 models that are currently on sale in India and are priced from Rs 85.95 lakh, for the Cayman and Rs 89.95 lakh, for the Boxster. (ex-showroom, India). The Porsche 718 range rivals the Jaguar F-type and the BMW Z4 in India.
