The Porsche Macan EV, the electric second generation of the brand’s smaller SUV, is being readied for market launches across the globe. In fact, bookings are already open, even in India, but the only version listed for now is the range-topping, 639hp Macan Turbo that costs Rs 1.65 crore, ex-showroom. But the good news is that more affordable, lower-powered EV variants are likely to join the India range later this year.

More Macan EV variants in the pipeline
With its new-gen platform, large battery and state-of-the-art EV tech, the new Macan EV is no longer the entry-level Porsche model its predecessor was, in India or globally. However, there will be new, more affordable variants added to the range, and they’re likely to be introduced this year itself. Porsche has not officially revealed these new Macan EV variants, but going by the model range of its other products like the Taycan, and the technical make-up of the existing models, it’s easy to speculate on what they might be.
Positioned between the Macan 4 (which is not coming to India) and the Turbo could be the Macan 4S, a mid-range model with around 500hp. And lower still could be a single-motor Macan with rear-wheel drive only, using the less powerful rear motor of the Macan 4. Though none of this is official, one thing Porsche has confirmed is that all Macan EV models will use the same 100kWh battery, and lower variants will not get a smaller battery.
Macan petrol to continue in select markets
While Porsche will be discontinuing the Gen 1 ICE Macan in certain markets – like some European countries due to various upcoming regulations – that won’t be the case everywhere. In some markets, including India, where there is still sufficient demand for petrol cars, and no short-term regulations that it will not meet, the decade-old model will continue to be on sale.
The Gen 1 Macan was first introduced globally in 2014, and was updated with two facelifts, the latest being in 2022. It is on sale in India in three variants: the base 2.0-litre four-cylinder Macan (Rs 88 lakh), and two 2.9-litre, six-cylinder models, the Macan S (Rs 1.44 crore) and GTS (Rs 1.54 crore).
While there is no official timeline and initial reports suggested it would stay on sale until the end of 2025, sources tell us no decision has been taken and the end-of-sale date for this model remains open.
Stay tuned for our review of the new Macan EV, which will be live on April 23, 2024.
