Last week, eyebrows rose as news of Porsche pulling the plug on its diesel line-up broke out. But the company has now clarified that it is not entirely moving away from diesel cars.
An official statement from Porsche India, says, "Although Porsche currently does not offer any vehicles with diesel engines, it does not mean a diesel exit at Porsche."
Additionally, Porsche has mentioned that there will be a diesel-engined variant of the new Cayenne going forward, but there is no clarity on the expected time of launch.
"As announced, the new Cayenne is set to feature a diesel powertrain. The exact time of the market launch is not yet clear”, the statement reads. It is worth noting that globally, there currently is no diesel variant of the third-generation Cayenne.
Exactly a week ago, Porsche had announced its decision to discontinue diesel versions of the Macan and Panamera, citing a "cultural shift" of the brand's customers.
Porsche has also previously stated diesel sales made up just 15 percent of its total worldwide sales, mostly in Europe, but the Cayenne diesel continues to be a key offering in several markets (including India), and will likely be the sole diesel model in Porsche's line-up going forward.
