Mahindra’s new MPV, known by its codename U321, has been repeatedly spotted testing across the country, and now we are just months away from its launch. Here are the most important things to know about the upcoming model:
Typical Mahindra looks
The U321 has only been seen under heavy camouflage but even so, a few design and styling details are clear. For one, the U321 will have a cab-forward design, with the A-pillar pushed far forward to maximise cabin space. Interestingly, the U321 also boasts a low floor despite its body-on-frame construction. Earlier speculation had suggested that the MPV would be based on a monocoque chassic. Spy shots also reveal a shorter version of the typical Mahindra toothy grille and slim (for its size) wrap-around headlamps with LED daytime running lamps (expected only on higher trims). LED inserts on the tail-lamps have also been seen. The top-spec variant is also expected with five-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels shod with chunky Apollo Apterra tyres.
Seven- and eight-seat configurations will be on offer
Mahindra will offer a degree of flexibility in its seating configuration, with seven- and eight-seat versions on offer. Based on the spy images, higher variants of the production-spec MPV will get a dual-tone dashboard with piano black and faux aluminium trim, and chrome-finished air con vents. The pictures also give an idea of the equipment the MPV will come with. A new-design steering wheel with audio controls, an auto climate control system, air con vents for all three rows of seats and the XUV500’s touchscreen infotainment system are some of the features you can expect.
It will get a new 1.6-litre diesel engine
The MPV will come powered by a new 1.6-litre diesel engine from the brand’s mFalcon family. The turbo-charged, four-cylinder diesel engine is expected to make power in the region of 130hp. While there is no word on the transmission options, we expect the U321 to come with a six-speed manual gearbox at launch. Mahindra could also look at an automatic in the future.
It is expected to be priced between Rs 10-15 lakh
The Mahindra U321 MPV is expected to slot right in between the upcoming new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Toyota Innova in size, but will be closer to the former on price. Competition will also come from the likes of the Renault Lodgy and the Honda BR-V.
It’s just one of three new Mahindra for 2018-19
For 2018, Mahindra has planned three major utility vehicle launches, one of which is the production-spec U321 MPV. The brand will also bring its SsangYong Tivoli-based sub-four-metre SUV, to rival the Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport (currently codenamed S201), and the Mahindra-badged all-new SsangYong Rexton to rival the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour.
