Renault has launched the Kwid starting at Rs 2.57 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The car's biggest draw is its attractive, crossover-like looks in a segment where cars hold a relatively basic design. The Renault Kwid is aimed squarely at models like the Maruti Alto, Hyundai Eon and the Datsun Go.
The Kwid gets a 799cc three-cylinder petrol unit that makes 53.2bhp and 7.34kgm of torque. Now although the power output isn't very high, what helps the Kwid is that it weighs a class-leading 660kg only, and that is thanks to the lightweight construction and all-aluminium engine. This helps it achieve a good power-to-weight ratio, and also deliver impressive fuel efficiency; Renault claims 25.17kpl.
It is 3,679mm long, 1,579mm wide, 1,478mm high, and has a wheelbase measuring 2,422mm. The high ground clearance of 180mm gives the Kwid its mini-SUV stance. Boot space is remarkable at 300 litres, and exceeds that of most of its rivals.
Renault is betting big on the Kwid. It looks more like a baby Duster, so while it's got the looks, it also promises segment-leading space, comfort, fuel efficiency, equipment and running costs as well. And thanks to Renault's heavy focus on localisation, prices are pretty competitive too.
