We were the first to bring you the BS6 Venue diesel’s prices back in February, and now we are the first to confirm that the Hyundai Venue's BS6-compliant diesel engine will produce 100hp – an increase of 10hp over the outgoing 1.4-litre diesel engine.
As we’ve said before, the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine in the BS6 Venue is similar to the 1.5-litre unit in the Kia Seltos and the upcoming second-gen Hyundai Creta. The main difference is that the engine in the larger SUVs comes with a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), while the Venue’s mill comes with the fixed geometry turbo (FGT). This reflects in the output figures too, with the Venue seeing a 15hp drop from the Seltos and Creta at 100hp.
While we do not have the torque output for the 1.5-litre diesel with the FGT, we expect it to match the BS4 1.4-litre diesel unit’s 220Nm figure. Like the outgoing engine, the new unit will get a 6-speed manual gearbox. Here’s how all the BS6-compliant compact SUVs compare on paper:

The table shows that despite the bump in power figures, the Venue is still falls behind the segment-leading Mahindra XUV300 and the Tata Nexon. While the Hyundai’s power figure is the same as the EcoSport’s, it is expected to have a higher torque figure. What'll be interesting to see is how ARAI fuel efficiency figures will change for the Venue; the BS4 diesel is rated at 23.7kpl.
After the Venue, this 100hp, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel FGT unit is expected to be found under the hood of the Verna facelift, the next-gen i20, and the Kia Sonet.
