The Tata Nexon EV will make its world premiere this Thursday, in Mumbai. Before the official unveil, we now bring you key details on Tata’s first electric SUV:

Tata Nexon EV: Battery and power details

The Nexon EV, as reported earlier, will feature Tata’s Ziptron technology. Like nearly every electric vehicle currently available in the world, the e-SUV will have its battery mounted under the floor, which should help reduce the centre of gravity, thereby ensuring body roll is minimised compared to the standard petrol or diesel-powered Nexon. The Nexon EV will feature a 28.8kWh battery pack that powers a 95kW/254Nm motor – the power figure converts roughly to 129hp.

Tata Nexon EV: Range and charging info

Based on the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC), the Nexon EV will have a 300km range and come with fast-charging capability. Sources tell us that the all-electric SUV will be able to gain about 80 percent charge in one hour with a DC fast charger, though it will take around 8-9 hours with a standard AC charger to attain 100 percent. The e-SUV will also have a hill-assist function and an energy regeneration feature that will work while the vehicle is in coasting mode. Tata hopes to assure buyers of the EV’s reliability by offering an 8 year/1,60,000km warranty as standard.

Tata Nexon EV: Dimensions and ground clearance

As reported by us earlier, the Nexon EV will be based on the Nexon facelift. The new EV SUV will be 3,995mm long, 1,811mm wide and 1,607mm high. While it will continue to feature the same 2,498mm wheelbase as the pre-facelift Nexon, the EV will sit slightly lower to the ground with a ground clearance figure of 209mm instead of the standard SUV’s 215mm. This is due to a unique suspension calibration for the EV. At the rear, the SUV will feature a semi-independent suspension with torsion beam setup.

Tata Nexon EV: Variants and features list

The Nexon EV will most-likely come in two variants. Higher variants will come with equipment like automatic full-LED headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, power folding wing mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a power sunroof, push-button start with a smart key and a wearable key, a Harman-sourced infotainment system with a rear view camera and park assist feature, eight speakers and Tata’s ConnectNext connectivity suite with voice command and other app-based features. It will also feature automatic control and dual-tone exterior paint combinations.

Tata Nexon EV: The rivals

Considering Tata Nexon EV prices are expected to be in the Rs 15 lakh region, buyers looking for a relatively affordable all-electric car or SUV by the end of 2020 will almost be spoiled for choice – the Hyundai Kona Electric (Rs 23.72-23.90 lakh) will soon get a rival in the form of the MG ZS EV (Rs 22 lakh); Tata is working on the Altroz EV (which will share the Nexon EV’s Ziptron powertrain technology and be priced in the Rs 12 lakh region); and Mahindra’s got the eKUV, a direct rival to the Nexon EV in the form of the eXUV300 and the Ford Aspire-based electric sedan in the works. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki’s Futuro-E concept, which will preview a small EV SUV, will make its debut at the 2020 Auto Expo.
