Tata Motors has announced that the all-electric Nexon will be launched in India by Q4 FY 2019-2020 (January-March, 2020). The model will be the first Tata EV to be powered by the brand’s Ziptron technology, which had been unveiled last month. While Tata has not revealed many details of the Nexon EV as yet, the company is targeting a range of about 300km, and its pricing is expected to be in the Rs 15-17 lakh range.
The Nexon EV’s powertrain, Ziptron, has been developed keeping Indian climatic and traffic conditions in mind, and it is also meant to address typical EV buyers' concerns of performance, range and safety. The battery pack comprises lithium-ion cells and features liquid cooling to maintain the ideal operating temperature. Typically, extremes of temperature have a huge impact on the performance of the battery system. The battery pack comes encased in a high-strength steel casing and boasts an IP67 rating – among the highest standards for waterproofing and dust protection. Tata Motors will offer a standard 8-year warranty on the battery pack and motor.
As part of its advertising campaign – dubbed #TheUltimateElectricDrive – Tata has driven the all-electric Nexon from Manali to Leh through some of the toughest terrain in India to prove the EV’s performance and durability despite limited charging infrastructure and under extreme weather conditions.
Following the Nexon, the Ziptron technology will also be featured in the Altroz EV and the updated Tigor EV next year. As for the competition, the Nexon EV’s main rival will be all-electric Mahindra XUV300, which is slated to launch by mid-2020.
