Update: Read our Tata Nexon first drive review
Tata Motors has released a first set of details and a teaser image of its upcoming SUV, the Nexon, which is slated to hit the showrooms in the coming months. The carmaker has also revealed engine details of the production-spec SUV.
The Nexon in its production guise will come with two new engines. The Nexon petrol will be powered by a 1.2-litre (1,198cc) Revotron turbo-petrol engine good for 110hp at 5,000rpm. This engine, a three-cylinder unit, will generate 170Nm of torque at 2,000-4,000rpm. The second powerplant will be an all-new, 1.5-litre (1,496cc) Revotorq diesel engine which also develops 110hp but at a lower 3,750rpm. It delivers a potent 260Nm of torque at 1,500-2,750rpm. Both engines will come with three driving modes – Eco, City and Sport. According to Tata, the sole transmission on offer will be a TA6300 six-speed manual unit. However, sources tell us that the diesel engine will also get an AMT option.
The manufacturer says both these engines have been designed at Tata’s in-house facility in Pune, along with inputs from suppliers like AVL, Bosch, Mahale and Honeywell. Tata will manufacture the petrol Revotron engine at its Sanand facility, while the diesel Revotorq motor will be produced at the Ranjangaon plant.
Unlike the more traditional SUV stance, the Nexon uses a coupe-like profile and design details based on Tata’s stylish Impact design language. It gets stylish dual-tone touches on its exterior and will come with similar interior quality seen on the Tiago and the Tigor compact sedan.
The Nexon will take on the likes of the Ford EcoSport and the Maruti Vitara Brezza, both being popular contenders in the sub-four-metre compact SUV segment. Expect Tata to price the Nexon SUV aggressively in the region of Rs 7-10 lakh.
