Tata Motors launched the 2021 Tata Tiago NRG in India a few days ago, marking the re-introduction of the NRG brand that was discontinued with the transition to BS6 norms.

Speaking to Autocar India at the Tiago NRG launch, Vivek Srivatsa -Marketing Head, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors - talks about future plans for the Tiago and Tigor family and the possibility for more differentiated versions in the range.

  • Tata to consider a Tiago Dark edition based on market demand
  • CNG variants of Tiago and Tigor certainly in the pipeline

Tata Tiago and Tigor: Dark Editions possible?

Tata Motors recently expanded the dark edition range with the Nexon and the Altroz, and it has been received very positively in the market. This also sparked huge interest in a Tiago Dark Edition.

To that, Srivatsa said, “Right now, we have launched the Dark Edition on premium and expressive products like the Harrier, Altroz and Nexon. Although we do not have any plans of a Tiago Dark Edition right now, if there’s demand and customer sentiment for such a model in the Tiago range, we would look into in.”

Here, it must also be mentioned that Tata has already trademarked the Tiago and Tigor Dark Edition names in India. And while manufacturers often trademark names but do not launch them, in this case, given the buzz around the Dark Edition models a launch is highly possible.

The launch of these editions would also help Tata sustain a buzz in the market, given that after the HBX, the company will have a long gap to the next all new model.

Tata Tiago and Tigor CNG variants in the pipeline

Tata Motors have long been looking to explore the CNG space in India, particularly given the success other carmakers have had in this area. Srivatsa said, “CNG is something we are looking at. It will be part of our portfolio pretty soon.”

Although Srivatsa did not specifically mention which product it would be launched in saying, “it will be introduced in some of our products”, it is likely to be in the Tiago and Tigor. CNG variants of both have been spotted on test on several occasions before and the launch is expected to happen in the coming months.

When adapted to run on CNG, both the Tiago and the Tigor will continue to be powered by the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Revotron engine, although power and torque figures could see a marginal drop from the current 86hp and 113Nm outputs. Both models are currently petrol-only– with diesels being dropped in the switch to BS6 – the addition of CNG variants will offer an economical option and should do well in this era of sky-rocketing fuel prices.

2021 Tata Tiago NRG: price and details

The 2021 Tiago NRG has been launched for a price of Rs 6.57 lakh for the petrol-MT variant and Rs 7.09 lakh for the petrol-AMT variant, both prices ex-showroom.The Tiago NRG commands a premium of Rs 23,000 over the standard top-spec Tiago XZ+ for both the manual and AMT variants.

The Tiago NRG sets itself apart with funky body cladding all around to give it a distinct rugged look. It also gets several blacked-out elements on the exterior and the ground clearance has also gone up by 11mm, taking it up to 181mm now. The interior also sees the addition of a few nifty features such as push start/stop button and keyless entry. The engine and gearbox, however, remain unchanged from the standard Tiago.
