Tata Motors has begun work on an all-new hatchback (Codename: X451) that is slated to hit Indian markets sometime in 2019. This new hatchback will be the first model to come off the brand’s flexible Advanced Modular Platform (AMP).

The new AMP platform, similar in concept to VW’s MQB, is made up of 15 individual modules that can be put together to form a complete car. The modules are flexible in size, for example, the floor pan can be scaled for length, width, track and wheelbase, with the latter two being variable by more than 100mm.

According to Tata, the AMP platform will facilitate high commonality between the parts, as much as 80 percent, and that key modules – like the front and rear axles, powertrains, HVAC modules, etc. – will contribute to 70 percent of the vehicle cost.

Apart from the X451 hatchback, which will take on cars the likes of the Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Honda Jazz, Tata will also roll out more AMP-based vehicles in the near future. There are also talks of a new City-rivalling sedan and a people mover, along with an SUV.

The AMP platform was to be shared with the VW group, however, the carmaker recently announced that its alliance had been called off due to both sides agreeing that the planned partnership areas may not lead to desired results.
