  • Redone front-end to be biggest cosmetic change on updated Fortuner

  • 2.8-litre diesel may churn out more than 200hp

  • India-spec model likely to continue with current BS6 petrol and diesel engines

The Toyota Fortuner is set to get an update with the global unveil of the refreshed model likely to take place in Thailand on June 4, 2020. Here’s what you need to know.

What's new on the refreshed Fortuner?

We’ve been tracking the updated Fortuner since the very first spy shots from Thailand emerged late last year. The images so far reveal a Fortuner with a redone front end. The facelifted Fortuner will come with an all-new front bumper and grille, restyled headlamps with LED lights and a slightly reshaped bonnet.  The Toyota SUV will also get new-look 17-inch alloy wheels and re-profiled LED tail-lamps at the back, with subtle revisions to the rear bumper too. The updates will bring the Fortuner's design more in-line with the newer Toyota SUVs like the RAV4 and the Raise sold abroad.

On the inside, expect the Fortuner to get a more advanced infotainment system, along with other minor cosmetic tweaks.

Will the updated Fortuner get new engines?

In markets abroad, the Fortuner will come with a more powerful iteration of the 2.8-litre diesel engine. Buzz is that the engine will make upwards of 200hp; up from the current power figure of 177hp. Whether the updated version of the engine comes to India remains a question mark for the moment given Toyota had only recently upgraded the unit to BS6-spec. In all probability, the Fortuner for India will continue with the current 2.8-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engines.

When will the Fortuner facelift launch in India?

The refreshed Fortuner will go on sale in Thailand first, followed by other international markets. For India, expect the market launch of the new Fortuner to take place only next year. Sources tell us that a "Special Edition" of the current pre-facelift Fortuner will be introduced before the facelifted car comes to Indian showrooms.
