Toyota has launched the new Fortuner Legender with a four-wheel drive variant priced at Rs 42.33 lakh (ex-showroom, India). This makes the new 4x4 version a full Rs 3.72 lakh pricier than the 4x2 and could see the SUV’s price touching the Rs 50 lakh-mark (on road) in some cities. The Legender 4x2 already costs around Rs 48 lakh on-road, in some cities.

Toyota Fortuner Legender 4x4: what’s new?

The biggest update is the four-wheel drive system, with the Fortuner Legender previously only available with two-wheel drive. As with the regular Fortuner 4x4, you get low range, hill descent control and a lockable differential.

Aside from the badging on the tailgate for Toyota’s four-wheel drive system, the 4x4 variant is identical to the 4x2. The cabin, too, is near identical, with the most notable change being the addition of the 11-speaker JBL audio system, previously limited to the four-wheel drive variants of the standard Fortuner.

The remainder of the equipment list is unchanged from the Legender 4x2 with kit including 18-inch alloys, quad-LED headlamps, sequential turn indicators, powered tailgate with hands free opening, 8.0-inch touchscreen, connected car tech, wireless phone charger and more.

On the safety front, all variants of the Fortuner get seven airbags, ABS, stability control, hill start assist and traction control as standard.

Toyota Fortuner Legender 4x4: engine and gearbox

Powering the Legender 4x4 is the same 204hp, 500Nm, 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. The unit is paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox as standard – the Legender gets neither the manual gearbox option, like the standard Fortuner, nor the petrol engine.

Toyota Fortuner: rivals

Since the launch of the Fortuner facelift, the SUV has been the most expensive in the segment and with the addition of the new Legender 4x4 variant, it remains the priciest model on sale. Rivals include the MG Gloster (Rs 29.98 lakh-37.68 lakh) and Isuzu MU-X (Rs 33.38 lakh-35.34 lakh) with the Ford Endeavour being discontinued after Ford ceased manufacturing in India.
