Updated Datsun Redigo launched at Rs 2.80 lakh

Redigo got the addition of ABS and EBD in March, and this update gives it a driver’s side airbag, rear parking sensors, speed alert system and seatbelt reminders; base variant’s price has increased by about Rs 12,000.

The Datsun Redigo is now compliant with AIS-145 safety norms as the Japanese carmaker has updated all variants of the budget hatchback with safety features such as a driver’s side airbag, rear parking sensors, a speed alert system and seatbelt reminders for the driver and front passenger. The previous update on the Redigo was in March where the hatchback got the addition of ABS and EBD.

Due to the increase in kit, the base Datsun Redigo’s price has gone up by about Rs 12,000, though the top-spec variant is just about Rs 4,000 more than the previous model. The Redigo range now starts at Rs 2.80 lakh and goes up to Rs 4.37 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India).

Along with the addition of safety kit, Datsun has also re-jigged the Redigo line-up. The previous Redigo came with a mid-spec T(O) variant, which has now been discontinued.

In every other respect, the Redigo is unchanged. It still gets the same 54hp, 0.8-litre petrol motor paired with a 5-speed manual and a 68hp, 1.0-litre petrol engine that comes with 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options.

While this safety update means Datsun can continue to produce the Redigo until the next safety norms deadline (all cars produced after October 1, 2019 will have to be crash-test compliant), it is safe to expect a facelift around that time that will meet the crash test norms as well as the pedestrian safety norms that will come into effect in August 2020.

However, whether this update will help improve sales of the Datsun Redigo, especially compared to better-selling rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Alto and the Renault Kwid, is yet to be seen.
