At the Vienna Engine Symposium September 2013, Volkswagen showcased a 10-speed DSG gearbox which was set to replace the six-speed DSG in an attempt to reduce CO2 emissions across the manufacturer's range. This new gearbox was expected to feature as part of the eighth-generation Passat line-up, which was unveiled last year, and also, serve some models from Skoda, Audi, Volkswagen and Seat.

Now, sources in company have confirmed to our sister publication Autocar UK, that the project had to be put on the backburner as it was getting increasingly complex and very expensive. The announcement leaves VW trailing behind Mercedes-Benz in the race to lower CO2 emissions by adopting advanced transmission technology.
