Volvo has opened bookings for its upcoming range-topping S90 sedan prior to the model’s launch in September later this year. The S90 will replace the ageing S80 luxury sedan in Volvo’s line-up and will put the Swedish carmaker back in the game in the hotly contested luxury sedan segment. The S90 will rival the Audi A6, BMW 5-series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes-Benz E-class.

The S90 for India will be offered with Volvo’s 2.0-litre diesel engine in two states of tune. The base D4 version of the motor will make 190hp while the more powerful D5 will produce 235hp. Petrol and hybrid powertrains could also be on the cards for India.

Volvo is expected to launch the car at a competitive price, with the range likely to start at around
Rs 50-55 lakh (ex-showroom). What will make the pricing more enticing is the possibility of the car being offered in a fully loaded trim. Lower-priced variants will be made available at a later stage.

Based on Volvo’s modular SPA platform, the S90 carries the carmaker’s latest design language first seen on the XC90 SUV. Distinctive styling features include the vertical nose and ‘Thor's Hammer’ LED DRLs in the headlamps.

The cabin too shares many elements with the Volvo SUV with a large portrait-style touchscreen and a similar instrument cluster and steering. The new sedan will also mark the debut many of Volvo’s radar-based safety aids in India.
