BMW reveals new quad-turbo diesel engine
BMW has revealed a new 3.0-litre, quad-turbo, six-cylinder diesel engine at the Vienna Motor Symposium 2016. The new motor, based on the company’s B57 six-cylinder diesel engine, is set to replace the current six-cylinder tri-turbocharged unit and the BMW 750d xDrive will be the first model to receive it under the hood.

The new high-performance diesel engine uses four turbochargers – two low-pressure and two high-pressure units – to boost engine output to 394hp and 760Nm of torque, up from the older tri-turbo unit’s 381hp and 740Nm. The engine can develop more torque but is limited to 760Nm as the eight-speed gearbox which it is to be paired with will be unable to handle a higher output.

The replacement of the older unit's large low-pressure turbo in favour of two smaller units has also reportedly led to an improvement in performance and power while keeping weight and costs in check. The new engine is said to be five percent more efficient than its predecessor.
The new six-cylinder is reported to be able to propel the new 750d xDrive from 0-100kph in around 4.5 seconds and take it to a top speed of 250kph.

Following its introduction in the range-topping diesel 750d xDrive, the engine is also expected to be used in the diesel M performance versions of the X5 and X6 SUVs along with the next-gen 5-series sedan.
