The Ford Figo Aspire is set to enter one of the most highly contested segments in the market here. The Aspire is a first from the company in the four-metre segment and is, unlike its other siblings, designed specifically for developing markets. However, to make an impact in the market, the Aspire will have to take on already-established models such as the Maruti Dzire, Honda Amze, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent.
Dimensions
At 3,995mm in length, the Ford Figo Aspire is on par with the rest, save the Honda Amaze which at 3,990mm, that is 5mm shorter than its rivals. In terms of width, the Tata Zest is the largest at 1,706mm, followed by the Figo Aspire and Maruti Dzire at 1,695mm. The Amaze is next in line with a width of 1,680mm, while the Hyundai Xcent is the narrowest at 1,660mm. The Zest is also the tallest car in the segment at 1,570mm followed by the Dzire at 1,555mm, the Figo Aspire at 1,525mm and the Xcent at 1,520mm. The Amaze is the shortest at 1,505mm.

Petrol power
The Aspire offers two petrol engine options – a 1.2-litre and a larger 1.5-litre four-cylinder motor. The Aspire is the only car in the segment that offers a 1.5-litre petrol, and the six-speed double clutch automatic gearbox is also a segment first. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is good for 86.8bhp and 11.4kgm of torque and is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, while the larger 1.5-litre engine produces 110.5bhp and 13.9kgm of torque, with the six-speed double clutch automatic gearbox as standard.
The Dzire gets Maruti’s 1.2-litre K-series four-cylinder petrol motor from the Swift hatchback developing 83.1bhp and 11.6kgm of torque. The engine is mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic.
The Amaze gets the same 1.2-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC engine from the Brio developing 86.8bhp and 11.1kgm of torque. The engine is offered with a choice of a five-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
The Zest is the only car in the segment to get a turbo-petrol motor. The 1.2-litre Revotron four-cylinder turbocharged engine makes 88.7bhp and 14.2kgm of torque. The petrol Zest is only offered with a five-speed manual gearbox.
The Xcent is powered by a 1.2-litre four-cylinder unit developing 81.8bhp and 11.6kgm of torque. The engine is mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic gearbox.

Diesel power
Ford has equipped the Figo Aspire with its tried and tested 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine from the Fiesta and the EcoSport. The engine has been upgraded to now produce 98.6bhp and 21.9kgm of torque and comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The Dzire gets the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre four-cylinder DDiS engine that is common to almost all diesel Marutis. The unit is rated at 74bhp and 19.3kgm of torque and only comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The Amaze is powered by Honda’s only diesel engine in India. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC unit is shared with the larger Mobilio MPV and City sedan and generates 98.6bhp and 20.3kgm of torque. However, unlike the larger City, the Amaze’s engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The Zest also uses the same Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre four-cylinder unit as the Dzire, but unlike the Maruti, it is available in two choices of output – 74bhp and 19.3kgm of torque; and 88.7bhp and 20.3kgm of torque. The Zest is the only diesel car to get an automatic transmission for the diesel model in the form of a five-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) gearbox. The car is also offered with a five-speed manual transmission as well.
The Xcent is the only car to get a three-cylinder unit. The 1.1-litre unit, the smallest in the segment, is good for 71bhp and 18.4kgm of torque and comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
