New Ford 3-cyl 1.0 EcoBoost motor

Ford is expanding its EcoBoost range of motors with the introduction of its latest 1.0-litre engine. As per the car manufacturer, this 3-cylinder 1-litre engine will power its small cars globally.

The latest engine will feature a turbocharger, direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing. Apart from being highly fuel-efficient, the motor will also offer performance that will be on par with four-cylinder, 1.6-liter engines.

The 1.0-litre EcoBoost motor gets an offset crankshaft that helps improve fuel economy. An in-house designed split cooling system has been developed that allows the cylinder block to warm up before the cylinder head – thus saving fuel, especially in cold weather conditions. The engine also boasts an exhaust manifold cast into the cylinder head which lowers the temperature of the exhaust gases, enabling the engine to run in a wider rpm band with the optimum fuel-to-air ratio. The new design also saves weight and allows the engine to operate smoothly.

This latest small capacity engine will be one of the most technologically advanced and fuel efficient units ever developed by Ford. It will also introduce a number of new technologies that will form a part of Ford engine DNA in the future. Ford has never built a regular production car engine with fewer than four cylinders.

First seen in the Ford Start concept car that debuted at Beijing in 2010, the engine more recently made its European debut in the Ford B-MAX at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. More details will be technical and application details for the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine will be released in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.

There hasn’t been a clear indication whether the new engine technology will make it to India right away. However, the company has made it clear that the three-cylinder engine will be available globally in its small cars, hinting at the Figo and the Fiesta models sold in India.
