New Hyundai Santa Fe to launch on Feb 6

Hyundai will launch the all-new Santa Fe SUV on February 6. Developed on an entirely new platform, this next-generation car is larger than the car it will replace – it is 40mm longer and 5mm wider, although the roofline is 45mm lower and it retains the same 2,700mm wheelbase. The new Santa Fe will also carry over Hyundai's powerful and refined 2.2-litre VGT (variable-geometry turbo) diesel engine from the current model.

 

The power and torque figures remain unchanged at 194bhp and 44.45kgm respectively, but the engine has received minor upgrades in the form of third-generation common-rail diesel technology with Piezo injectors for better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Buyers will get to choose between a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission, while the on-demand four-wheel-drive system will be standard.

 

 

Hyundai has spent a lot of time getting this new Santa Fe to India, and that’s because the Korean manufacturer wanted to establish a clear strategy with which to take on the current segment king, the Toyota Fortuner. To ensure the success of its new SUV, Hyundai will bring the costs down by localising assembly at its plant in Chennai, and in doing so, will be able to offer competitive pricing.

 

The biggest worry at Hyundai is that the Santa Fe doesn’t have the brand strength to compete head on with the Fortuner. To combat this, the Santa Fe is expected to retail at a lower price than the Toyota, and combined with a long list of features and Hyundai's striking new design language, it will aim to offer an irresistible value package.

 

Hyundai first entered the SUV segment with the Terracan, followed by the Tuscon and then the Santa Fe. But all three SUVs received a lukewarm response from buyers and didn't set the sales chart on fire. Though the Korean manufacturer is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the new Santa Fe becomes a success, its success story remains to be drafted.
