After launching the single-cab version of the Genio earlier this year, Mahindra & Mahindra is now working on a double-cab version of the Xylo pickup. Here are the spy pics of the commercial vehicle spotted testing in Ooty by our alert reader, Nitesh Jain.

As apparent from the spy pics, the latest version of the pick-up gets an added second row seat and rollover bars fitted at the back, thus eating up a portion of the loading floor. The pickup has been developed from Mahindra’s Ingenio platform (U-platform) – the very same platform that formed the basis of the Xylo MPV. The Genio variants will compete with the Tata 207 Di (single and double-cab) variants.

Powering the double-cab pickup could be the identical 2.5-litre mDI CRDe motor from the Genio single-cab and the Xylo D2. Underneath, the double-cab pickup will come with independent front suspension and hydraulic double-acting telescopic shock absorbers to handle extra payload. It will also get features like emergency retractable front seatbelts, radial tubeless tyres, load sensing proportioning valve (LSPV) brakes that adjust braking pressure depending on the payload, cross-member reinforced doors, power steering, a floor console with a mobile charging point, and a larger glove box.

Mahindra has developed the Genio with an initial investment of Rs 225 crore and the company will churn out more products from the similar platform. M&M is also working on a CNG variant of the pickup which will be launched alongside the double-cab pickup.

At present, Mahindra’s Chakan plant has a capacity of manufacturing 2000 Genio pickups per month, which can be expanded to meet with the market demand. The company is also eyeing the export markets where it’s already selling the Scorpio and the Bolero pickups.
