The month of August saw an uptick in domestic sales across the board and exports also grew for the majority of manufacturers. Here’s the lowdown on how each manufacturer performed in August 2022.

Hero Motocorp: 4,50,740 units

The world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero Motocorp, managed to rack up sales of 4,50,740 units in the month of August, which represents an increase in both month-on-month and year-on-year sales. In relation to its sales figure for July 2022, when it sold 4,30,684 units, this marks an increase of 4.6 percent.

Even when compared to its sales figures for August 2021, which stood at 4,31,137 units, it marks an increase of 4.5 percent. However, while total sales figures have gone up, exports have fallen and by some margin. Compared to the 22,742 units it managed to export in August 2021, Hero managed only 11,868 units in August 2022, which is a substantial decline of 47.81 percent. This suggests that the company is focusing its production and distribution capabilities on the domestic market.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI): 4,23,216 units

Racking up sales of 4,23,216 units in August 2022 put HMSI tantalisingly close to Hero Motocorp, with the Japanese giant trailing behind by just 27,524 units. This figure again shows positive MoM and YoY growth for Big Red. Compared to its sales for August 2021 of 4,01,480 units, this month saw an increase of 5.4 percent.

MoM sales have also risen by 5.1 percent, when compared to their 4,02,701 units figure for July 2022. Continuing the trend of higher sales volume are the 39,307 units exported this month, which is 30.5 percent higher, when compared to the 30,114 units exported in the same month last year. This month saw the arrival of four new Honda products: the CB 300F, Activa Premium Edition, Shine Celebration Edition and the Dio Sports.

TVS Motor Company: 3,15,539 units

TVS’ upward trajectory continues in the domestic market – with 3,15,539 units in sales in August 2022, it marked a sharp increase of 15 percent YoY. The biggest increase comes when compared to its sales for the previous month, which stood at 2,01,942 units, enabling the Hosur-based manufacturer to rack up a whopping 56.2 percent larger sales figure.

The two-wheeler EV sector too has been showing major progress for TVS, with its iQube finding 4,418 homes this month when compared to the much smaller 649 units it managed to sell in August of last year. However, exports appear to have taken a back seat, with 76,214 units this month marking a decline of 19.2 percent when compared to the 94,314 units it exported in August of last year.

Bajaj Auto: 2,33,838 units

With sales of 2,33,838 units, Bajaj has posted a very significant increase of 48 percent when compared to its sales figures for the same month in the previous year. Comparing MoM sales too, Bajaj has shown sizeable growth of 42.2 percent. However, like TVS, Bajaj too has seen a significant downturn in the number of exports. Compared to its figure of 1,50,670 units last year, it could only manage 1,21,787 units this year, showing a sizable decline of 19.2 percent. This month saw the arrival of the rugged CT 125X commuter from Bajaj.

Suzuki Motorcycle India: 64,654 units

Recording sales of 64,654 units in August 2022, Suzuki grew marginally by  4.6 percent in YoY performance when compared to its figure of 61,809 units sold in the same month last year. MoM performance too saw a slight growth of 6.2 percent when compared to its figure of 60,892 units sold in July 2022. Suzuki exported 14,905 units, marking an increase of 27.9 percent, when compared to its figure of 11,654 units for the same month last year.

Royal Enfield: 62,236 units

With sales figures of 62,236 units, the Chennai-based manufacturer registered a massive growth of 61.4 percent compared to its figures for August 2021, which stood at 38,572 units. When compared to its figures for July 2022 (46,529 units), RE recorded an increase of 33.8 percent, and with the Hunter having joined the line-up early in August, you can expect the company’s performance to continue growing in the near future.

Export markets seem to be favouring RE as well with a growth of 8.1 percent to 7,876 units, up from the 7,288 units it managed to clock in August of last year. The launch of the Hunter 350 was just one among a litany of launches coming from RE’s stable in the near future.
