The festive season is right around the corner, and many will want to make a new car purchase at this auspicious time. However, if you are one of the many, you might want to take a look at this month’s cover story – where we show you over 40 new cars that will go on sale in the next 12 months. There’s something for everyone.

    VW’s compact saloon plans

After the huge success of the Maruti Dzire and Honda Amaze, VW is planning to join the sub-four-metre saloon fray. Interestingly, though, they’re working on two separate cars – a shortened Vento and a booted version of the Up hatchback – but only one will be chosen to go on sale in India. We take a detailed look at both these cars to see which might work better.

    Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG vs BMW M5

BMW pretty much pioneered the sports luxury saloon concept with the original M5, and it has always been the best at it ever since. However, the brand new E 63 AMG is arguably Merc’s best effort yet, and could just maybe beat the pioneer at its own game. We put the two head-to-head in the city, on the highway, and on the track.

    Skoda Octavia vs VW Jetta

The Skoda Laura was our pick of the executive segment until the new Jetta came along and inched ahead of it. And now that the Laura has been succeeded by the Octavia, the fight is back on. Which of these European cousins will emerge victorious?

    Hyundai Grand i10 vs rivals

Wedged between the regular i10 and the i20, you might think that the new Hyundai Grand i10 exists in no-man’s land. However, it’s not the only spacious, compact, tailored-for-the-city premium hatchback around, and the Figo, Liva and Ritz have come along to prove why they are better.

    Rolls-Royce Wraith

A company known for making simply the finest chauffeured motoring experience in the world has taken a crack at making a fast coupé. The 624bhp Ghost-based Wraith is the fastest and most powerful Rolls-Royce ever, but as we found out, it’s still very much a Rolls as well.

    Lamborghini Driving Academy

Driving a Lamborghini is one thing. Learning how to get the most out of it on a track from the company’s own test drivers is something else altogether. We went to the infamous Imola circuit in Italy, to see how fast we could bring ourselves to push the best of Lamborghini’s road cars.

    Building a Mercedes engine

Here’s one for the really serious car nerds. Ever wanted to put together an engine from scratch? We certainly have, and so when Mercedes invited us over to build one of its M272 petrol V6 engines – the one that powers the S-class – you can bet we didn’t even bat an eyelid.

    New Kawasakis

The Japanese motorcycle company isn’t holding back with its model range, and hot on the heels of the Ninja 300 and 650 are these – the ZX10R and ZX14R. These powerful sportsbikes are on sale in India, and we take an in-depth first look at them to tell you what you can expect.

    Motorsport

The 2013 Indian GP is just around the corner, and we’ve got a detailed preview to bring you up to speed before practice, qualifying and raceday. We also feature Narain Karthikeyan’s triumphant return to the podium in the AutoGP World Series.
