    The Tata Nexon EV and MG Windsor rank high on the sales charts, but which one performs better in real-world conditions?

    Although it debuted just last year, the MG Windsor has already garnered a sizeable consumer base in India thanks to its spacious interior, lounge-esque seating and innovative battery-as-a-service subscription model. Standing in sharp contrast to the Windsor’s recency is the Tata Nexon EV, which launched in 2020, received a facelift in 2023 and is one of the highest-selling electric cars in India. Let’s look at how the Nexon EV holds up against the newer Windsor in performance.

    While the Nexon EV offers 45kWh, 40.5kWh, and 30kWh battery pack options, we’ve considered the 40.5kWh since it’s the closest to the Windsor’s sole 38kWh battery pack. In the given state of tune, the Nexon EV develops 145hp and 215Nm of torque, whereas the Windsor clocks a slightly lower output at 136hp and 200Nm. At 35kg lighter than the Windsor, the Nexon EV also has a minor weight advantage, yielding greater power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratios. Things look good for the Nexon EV on paper, but how do they translate in the real world?

    Our real-world testing interestingly found that in the dash from 0-100kph, it was the Windsor that stayed marginally ahead of the Nexon EV up until the 60kph mark. By the time both cars reached 80kph, the Nexon EV took a 0.04-second lead and kept pulling ahead as it attained 100kph and beyond. At 120kph, the Nexon EV is nearly a full second quicker than the Windsor.

    The Nexon EV reigns triumphant over the Windsor in our rolling acceleration test. From 20-80kph, the Tata EV outperformed the Windsor by 0.2 seconds. In the 40-100kph dash, the gap widened further to 0.57 seconds in the Nexon EV’s favour.

    Autocar India's testing standards

    Before we conduct our EV performance tests, we check and maintain tyre pressures based on the manufacturer’s recommendation and ensure the car is fully charged. The car is then tested in a controlled environment with two people on board, and the data is collected via highly accurate GPS-based timing equipment.

    The Tata Nexon EV line-up starts at Rs 12.49 lakh and goes up to Rs 17.19 lakh, with the 40.5kWh variants priced in the Rs 14.59 lakh-16.49 lakh range. The MG Windsor is priced between Rs 13.99 lakh and Rs 15.99 lakh. Opting for the Windsor's battery rental service can shed up to Rs 4 lakh from its ex-showroom price.
