Two-wheelers, such as motorcycles and scooters, are as much a style statement as a means of transport. This is the reason people tend to customise their two-wheelers. You may see a lot of tastefully modified bikes. A lot of effort and consideration goes into modifying these vehicles. If you are also planning to modify your bike, you must understand a few important things before you embark on the exercise. Remember that modifications to the vehicle have to be registered with your RTO as well as endorsed in two-wheeler insurance.

Ensure your modifications comply with the law

Any modifications made to a vehicle must be within a set specification. As per a 2019 ruling by the Supreme Court, vehicles cannot be modified in such a manner that they significantly alter the original specifications made by the manufacturer. Such specifications include all those that were added by the manufacturer in the certificate of registration of the vehicle. One such example is that a two-wheeler can in no way be converted to carry more than two people. Similarly, the size, engine and braking system of a vehicle cannot be modified.

Approved modifications should be done by professionals

While the scope for any heavy-duty modifications to two-wheelers has been reduced considerably, you can still make many changes. Paint jobs, for example, are still allowed as long as the same is done within RTO limitations. Similarly, the fitment of small accessories, such as decals, visors, and engine fairing is still within the legal limits. Make sure that you get professionals to do these jobs. Have you tried painting your bike? Unless you do it day after day for months, you will never be able to get the perfect finish. Better to let the professionals do it.

Function over form and no compromises in safety

When making even the smallest modification to your two-wheeler, make sure that you rely on function over form and never make any safety compromises. Looking good is never more important than looking at where you are going. Many people tend to remove the side mirrors from their bikes or scooters as the very first modification. Doing that can invite a challan of around Rs 1,000. Make sure that every modification you do to your vehicle improves its functionality first and then looks.

Your insurance company needs to know about your modifications

When you buy two-wheeler insurance online, you must keep in mind that you need to declare all modifications beforehand. If you do not declare these modifications, your two-wheeler insurance claims may be declined. Most companies that sell two-wheeler insurance online tend to give the option to declare the modifications. Similarly, you should also declare and get add-ons for any expensive accessories you may have fit on your machine.

All in all, while the scope of modifications may have been limited to a considerable extent, it is still possible to make some tasteful changes to your vehicle. Just make sure that you declare your modifications with your two-wheeler insurance company. Keep an eye on the money you spend and always be mindful of safety when making changes.
