BMW Motorrad has unveiled the M 1000 RR 50 Years edition in the distinctive Sao Paulo Yellow colour scheme. The special edition model  celebrates 50 years of the company’s M division.

The 50 Years edition gets an M GPS lap-timing system, an M milled parts package, the M carbon package and a lighter swingarm finished in anodised aluminium. Other bits include BMW's new DLC-coated, maintenance-free M-Endurance chain, and a cover for the passenger seat. All this means that in terms of specification, this special edition sits on par with the Competition variant of the M 1000 RR. The differentiating factor is the colour scheme you see here, which is the only option this edition comes in.

The flashy Sao Paulo yellow colour scheme is also seen on some BMW M cars, in this case, the M4.

While BMW hasn’t announced how many units of this version will be produced, or whether it will be made available in India, we do know that in the USA, it is priced at $36,995. Or in other words, exactly the same price as the M 1000 RR in Competition trim. Which means, essentially, this is merely a new colour scheme, and likely an effort to help clear some stock from the factory. If BMW does decide to offer it in India and the trend of pricing it on par with the Competition variant continues, then expect this special edition to carry an eye-watering Rs 45 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi price tag).

The special edition of the M 1000 RR seen here with a 3.0 CSL race car, one of the many legendary creations of BMW's M division.

Established in 1972 as the BMW Motorsport division, the name was later shortened to BMW M, and while it has predominantly dealt with the Bavarian brand’s cars, we have recently seen M badges appear on the company’s two-wheelers as well. It first appeared as a package for the S 1000 RR superbike, before the company launched the first M model, the M 1000 RR – the same model that has received this special edition.
