The Delhi government is getting ready to finalise and implement a proposal that makes a provision for purchasing fancy VIP registration numbers straight from the dealership. While people have been able to buy special number plates in the past, the Delhi government is now making a legal provision for it.
It was in 2017 that the Delhi government had prepared a proposal to make VIP number plates available for two-wheelers. According to government officials privy to the development, the draft policy for the proposal of auctioning the special registration numbers is likely to be cleared in the next fortnight. The government officials also said that by next week, the final draft will be sent for approval before the cabinet and a final go-ahead will be sought by Delhi Lieutenant-Governor, Anil Baijal.
Buyers could possibly secure the numbers of their choice starting May. The proposal, once approved, will see the price for the golden number 0001 starting at Rs 50,000, while bidding for numbers from 0002 to 0009 will start at Rs 30,000. With numbers such as 0786, 1111, 9999, 7777 and 1000 being hugely popular amongst the people, the transport department has set a base price of Rs 20,000 for them. Other less popular pattern-based numbers like 0100, 2222, 8888, 6666 will be sold for Rs 15,000.
The numbers will be allotted to two-wheeler buyers on a first-come, first-serve basis via their online portal at the showroom, itself.
