Bike, scooter sales January 2023: Royal Enfield outsells Suzuki again

    Royal Enfield has sold more units than Suzuki for the third time in the last four months.

    Sales figures for the six heavyweight two-wheeler OEMs in the industry for the first month of 2023 have been revealed and here’s how each brand fared.

    Hero MotoCorp: 3,49,437 units

    The world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer recorded a decline of 11.35 percent, when compared to its sales figure for December 2022. Even compared to its sales figure for January 2022, Hero reported a slump of 2.6 percent year-on-year.     Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI): 2,78,143 units

    HMSI reported an increase of 19.3 percent, against the sales figure it managed to post in December 2022. However, the Japanese giant reported a decline of 11.8 percent compared to its sales numbers for January 2022. Last month saw Honda launch the electronic key-fob equipped Activa H-Smart scooter in India. 

    TVS Motor Company: 2,64,710 units 

    TVS has reported a 16.3 percent increase in sales numbers over its figure for December 2022. When compared to its sales numbers for the month of January in 2022, the Hosur-based marque reported a substantial increase of 57.8 percent. TVS was one of the manufacturers to increase its share in the Indian two-wheeler pie in the April-December 2022 period

    Bajaj Auto: 1,40,428 units

    Month-on-month, Chakan-based Bajaj Auto bettered its sales tally for January 2023 by 11.9 percent. Compared to its sales figures for January last year, Bajaj reported an increase of 3.6 percent.     Royal Enfield: 67,702 units

    Reporting sales units of 67,202 units in January 2023, RE not only posted an increase of 13.2 percent over its sales numbers for December 2022, but also outsold Suzuki. This is the third time in the past four months that Royal Enfield has managed to do so despite the Chennai-based marque retailing larger and pricier offerings than Suzuki. Compared to its figure for January last year, RE reported an increase of 36.1 percent.     Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SIMPL): 66,209 units

    While Suzuki was outsold by RE, it did manage to report an increase of 61.8 percent over its sales tally for December 2022. Compared to its sales figure for January 2022, which stood at 40,905 units, it managed to record an increase of 9.2 percent.
