Recent images of the new-gen KTM 390 Duke have given us a good idea of what that bike will be like. However, we now have our first look at the next-generation Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 based on that platform and there’s quite a bit to talk about.

    1. This will be the first time the Husqvarna 401s are sold in India
    2. Based on next-gen 390 Duke platform
    3. Will get larger seats, new bodywork

A single image that appears to have leaked from within the factory shows a new Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 from the side and it is clear to see that this is the next-generation model. First, the engine cases look very similar to what’s been spied on the upcoming KTM and we suspect that this will be a slightly larger engine (possibly up to 399cc) that produces a bit more power and torque.

Moreover, the new chassis shows a side-slung monoshock as well as a larger new swingarm – both already seen on the new KTM 390 Duke. Like the recently launched KTM 390 Adventure, this bike also features adjustable suspension at both ends, with compression and rebound adjusters at the front while the rear gets rebound and preload adjustment.

What gives away the fact that this is the India-spec model is that it can clearly be seen with a saree guard protecting the chain on the left. Visually, the bike has a similar shape to the current Husqvarna Svartpilen 401, but the body panels are different and the seat appears to be longer and wider, which addresses one of the complaints with the old bike. Whether Husqvarna has been able to do anything about the tall seat height remains to be seen.

It appears that along with the larger engine and new chassis, the Svartpilen is also making a change in its identity, moving away from the faux-scrambler vibe and more towards a roadster. This can be seen in the new flatter handlebar and the alloy wheels wrapped in what appear to be Metzeler M5 tyres. This is no bad thing because the original Svartpilen’s scrambling capabilities were restricted to the way it looked.

Given the fact that this bike has been spied with India-specific bits like the saree guard and engine guards bolted to the frame, there is good reason to believe that Bajaj may end up launching the Husqvarna 401 models in India this time around. Earlier this year, KTM CEO Stefan Pierer confirmed to us that the next-gen 390 Duke would launch in India by the middle of this year. If that bike is still on schedule, we can expect to see the new Husqvarna 401’s launch later this year or perhaps in early 2024.
