Triumph Speed 400 launched at Rs 2.33 lakh

    The first 10,000 bookings will get the bike at Rs 2.23 lakh, making the Speed just Rs 2,000 more expensive than the top-spec Classic 350.

    A week after the Triumph 400 duo were unveiled to the world, one of the bikes has now been launched in India. The Triumph Speed 400 is priced at Rs 2.33 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The Scrambler 400 X will be launched in India later.

    Powering both these new entry-level Triumphs is a liquid-cooled, 398cc, single-cylinder mill making 40hp at 8,000rpm and 37.5Nm at 6,500rpm. This brand-new engine has been christened the TR-series and is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Output figures are in the ballpark of the KTM 390s (also made in India by Bajaj), but the British duo make their peak figures earlier in the rev band. 

    The design of both the smaller Speed and Scrambler bikes has been inspired from the larger models in the bikemaker’s lineup and fit and finish seems to be quite premium despite the relatively affordable price tag. Both bikes use a digi-analogue display and can even be equipped with heated grips, a very rare feature in this category.     The Speed 400 runs on 17-inch alloy rims at both ends shod with MRF Steel Brace rubber (that debuted recently on the Ultraviolette F77) and not the premium Metzeler or Pirelli tyres it was seen rolling on in the international press shots. There were also some Speed 400s which were shod with Apollo Alpha H1 rubber, so it remains to be seen which tyre makes it to customer bikes or if both do. Similiarly, the Scrambler 400 X runs on 19/17-inch alloy rims at both ends shod with dual-purpose MRF Zapper Kurve rubber. 

    Costing Rs 2.33 lakh, the Triumph Speed 400 comfortably undercuts its rivals like the KTM 390 Duke (Rs 2.97 lakh), BMW G 310 R (Rs 2.85 lakh), RE Interceptor 650 (Rs 3.03 lakh – Rs 3.31 lakh). 

    Both bikes come with a 2 year/unlimited mileage warranty and a 16,000 km service interval. The Speed 400 will be available from late July onwards and the Scrambler 400 X will come a little later in October.
