Four years is a long time in the highly competitive world of hatchbacks, and so, finally Hyundai has treated its popular Grand i10 to mechanical and feature updates to help it compete with rivals like Maruti Swift, Ford Figo, Tata Bolt and the newly launched Maruti Ignis. The updates give the Grand i10 an even longer feature list and a larger and more powerful diesel motor which also promises better fuel efficiency. Under the hood
The main highlight of the new Grand i10 is the diesel motor which gets a capacity increase of 66cc and now makes 75hp and 190Nm of torque, up by 4hp and 30Nm. The Maruti Ignis has a slight capacity advantage over the Grand i10, with the Fiat-sourced Multijet diesel engine. Power and torque figures are similar though at 75hp and 190Nm. Using the same engine, the Swift too makes the same power and torque as the Ignis – 75hp and 190Nm – but fuel efficiency is lower at 25.2kpl. Like the Marutis, the Tata Bolt too uses the same Fiat 1.3-litre Multijet diesel motor and delivers an identical output. The Ford, however, is a complete contrast to the others. It has the biggest diesel motor at 1.5 litre, capable of making 100hp and 215Nm – the highest in the segment. It’s no surprise that it is the fastest to 100kph at 10.5sec, followed by the Ignis and Swift at 12.6 and 13.6sec, respectively. The updated Grand i10, however, despite the capacity and power upgrade, finishes fourth at 15.1sec, while the Tata Bolt comes in last with 16.58sec.

The Grand i10 now with the help of a new alternator management system gets a higher ARAI-tested fuel-economy figure of 24.95kpl. But it's the Ignis, with its relatively lighter kerb weight, that boasts a highest claimed fuel economy figure of 26.8kpl. Despite being the most powerful, the Figo finishes a close second to the Ignis with a claimed figure of 25.83kpl. The Swift, on the other hand, comes third with a claimed figure of 25.2kpl and the Tata Bolt comes in last after the Grand i10 with a claimed figure of 22.95kpl.
Dimensions
In terms of size, the Figo is the longest car here at 3,886mm, followed by the Swift at 3,850mm and the Bolt at 3,825mm. At 3,765mm, the Grand i10 is shorter but has a good 65mm over the Ignis.
At 1,695mm, the Swift, Bolt and Figo are the widest cars here. The Ignis comes in second with 1,690mm followed by the Grand i10 which is 30mm narrower. The Grand i10 is also the shortest in terms of height at 1,520mm while the Ignis at 1,595mm, is the tallest here.
Talking about the wheelbase, it's the Figo that takes the lead with 2,491mm, followed by the Bolt and Ignis. Here too, it's the Grand i10 that's the smallest.

Equipment and Safety
The Grand i10 is far ahead in the features game and that's exactly what we expect from a Hyundai car. It gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is compatible with Android and Apple devices. Then there’s the reverse camera, and climate control that was missing in the old car. On the safety front, the Grand i10 gets two airbags and ABS as standard on the top-spec Asta model. The Ignis too gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice commands, reverse camera, automatic climate control, and it is the sole car in the segment to get projector-based LED headlamps. Unlike the Hyundai, two airbags and ABS are standard on all variants of the Ignis; it also gets ISOFIX mounts. Meanwhile, the Figo lacks quite a bit of features in comparison. There’s no keyless entry and go, no touchscreen infotainment system and it may lack the vibrant interiors of the competition. But it somewhat makes up by offering the most number of airbags; a total of six to finish on top in the safety game. While the Swift gets keyless entry and go, climate control, Bluetooth telephony, it doesn’t get the touchscreen infotainment system like the Ignis. Maruti now offers driver-side airbag as standard on all variants of the Swift, but you can opt to buy the passenger-side airbag on all variants. The top-spec variants get dual airbags and ABS as standard. The top-spec XT variant of the Bolt gets a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice commands, climate control system, Bluetooth telephony and a Harman audio system. Two airbags and ABS are standard on the XMS and top-spec XT variants only.
