A flagship M7 version of the BMW 7-series is close to being given the go-ahead, according to BMW North America CEO Ludwig Willisch.

Willisch, a former head of BMW’s M division, said he and his counterpart in China were pushing Munich for an M7, given the popularity of large performance saloons in the two key BMW markets.

“I think we will get it,” Willisch told Autocar on the chances of an M7 being launched, although he didn’t confirm a timetable. BMW bosses have previously ruled out an M7, but the demands of the rapidly expanding Chinese luxury performance market have strengthened the business case for such a car.

Willisch also confirmed that an M version of the BMW 6-series Gran Coupé would be unveiled next year, but he ruled out eventual M versions of all BMW models, in particular the X1 and X3 SUVs, despite demand for the X5 M and X6 M.

However, BMW will offer a range of accessories to beef up the smaller crossovers through its M Performance line. Other BMWs will also benefit from the M Performance range, allowing customers who don’t want a full-bore M-car to take advantage of M division’s performance expertise.
