Volkswagen India has launched the BS6-compliant Polo and Vento and with this update, has dropped the 1.5-litre TDI diesel, the 1.6-litre MPI petrol unit, the 1.2-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine as well as the 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox from its model line-up. Prices for the BS6 Polo start at the same Rs 5.82 lakh as the BS4 model, while prices for the BS6 Vento start at Rs 8.86 lakh.
The Polo Trendline, Comfortline and Highline Plus variants are available with an upgraded 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated MPI engine and comes mated to a new 6-speed manual gearbox. However, the new 1.0 TSI engine is only available in the Highline Plus and GT Line variants of the hatchback. Producing 110hp and 175Nm of peak torque, the turbo-petrol engine can be had with either the new 6-speed manual or the new 6-speed torque convertor automatic transmission. Even though the base BS6 Polo variant is priced the same as its BS4 counterpart, overall prices for the Polo 1.0 MPI have increased by about Rs 4,000. Interestingly, the range-topping Polo GT with the 1.0 TSI engine and 6-speed auto ‘box undercuts the previously available top-spec Polo GT with the 1.2 TSI and 7-speed dual-clutch unit by a margin of Rs 17,000. The option of a Polo 1.0 TSI with a 6-speed manual is sure to have enthusiasts interested.
Coming to the Vento, the 1.6 MPI and 1.2 TSI have both effectively been replaced by the 1.0 TSI engine. The 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, but the 6-speed automatic is only available on the top-spec Highline and Highline Plus variants. Compared to the BS4 Vento, BS6-compliant Vento prices start at Rs 10,000 higher. The top-spec BS6-compliant automatic Vento variants cost about Rs 12,000 more than their BS4 counterparts.

In the Indian market, the Volkswagen Polo has a face off against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Ford Figo. Meanwhile, the Volkswagen Vento will rival the all-new Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and the Hyundai Verna facelift.
