Over the last few days, we’ve brought you details of the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso’s dimensions, features and the first, fully undisguised image of the upcoming SUV-inspired hatchback. What we can tell you now is that the S-Presso utilises Suzuki’s lightweight Heartect platform, and will soon be one of the lightest cars on sale in India.
The S-Presso will be the 7th (and the smallest) model in Maruti Suzuki’s range – after the Ignis, Baleno, Ertiga, Swift, Dzire and Wagon R – to be based on the Heartect platform, which not only brings structural rigidity benefits that will help it meet the updated crash-test norms, but also will make the car light.
Weighing 726kg, the base S-Presso is marginally lighter than the entry-level 800cc Alto, and a good 43kg less than the Alto K10. Even the top-spec model, at 763kg, is a good 21kg less than the Alto K10 VXi, and the AMT-equipped, top-spec S-Presso weighs just 4kg more. That said, the S-Presso is heavier than the Renault Kwid, which, in base spec, weighs in at a light 699kg.
At 3,565mm, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is 20mm longer than the Alto K10, but is a significant 114mm shorter than the Renault Kwid. This considerable difference in length also means the S-Presso has a wheelbase that’s 42mm shorter than that of the Kwid. Measuring 1,520mm in width, it is 59mm narrower than the Renault (1,579mm) as well. However, the S-Presso stands tall – at 1,564mm, it is a full 86mm taller than the Kwid.
The Maruti S-Presso will be available in four variants – Std, LXi, VXi and the range-topping VXi+. ABS, a driver-side airbag, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminders, a digital speedometer and a speed alert system will be standard across the range, while a front passenger airbag will be standard on the top-spec VXi+ (and optional on all other variants), along with the 7.0-inch SmartPlay Studio infotainment system with voice recognition, steering-mounted controls, rear parcel tray, body-coloured outside mirrors, and door handles, and a 12V-volt accessory socket.
To be launched on September 30, the Maruti S-Presso is expected to be priced from Rs 3.3-4.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
