Mercedes-Benz is set to add to its E-class line-up in India with the launch of the new E 220d version on June 2, 2017. Importantly, the E 220d will debut Mercedes’ new 2.0-litre diesel engine in India. The new, modular 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which has replaced the older 2.1-litre unit globally, makes 194hp and 400Nm of torque and comes paired with the automaker’s nine-speed automatic gearbox. Mercedes has been hard at work reengineering the engine to run on BS-IV fuel quality with the new motor originally developed to conform to Euro VI norms.
The E 220d will be the second diesel engine version of the new E-class in India. The E-class was launched with a 258hp, V6 diesel in February 2017. However, you can expect pricing for the E 220d to be closer to the E 200 petrol and in the region of Rs 57-58 lakh (ex-showroom). The lower price point vis-à-vis the E 350d is sure to be a big draw to buyers looking for a diesel E-class.
You can expect the new diesel engine to find its way onto other Mercedes models in the coming years. The engine’s sub-2000cc displacement also keeps it out of the perview of any potential ban on large capacity diesel cars as was the case last year. Mercedes-Benz was among the manufacturers worst hit by the ban on diesel cars with engines larger than 2000cc.
