Mini has launched the all-electric Cooper SE in India, which is priced at Rs 47.20 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Being brought in as a CBU unit, the hatchback is available in a single, fully-loaded variant. Only 30 units were allotted for India in the first batch with Mini saying that all units have already been spoken for. Deliveries for the first batch will start from March, while bookings for the next batch will also commence around the same time.

  • Cooper SE available in four colour options
  • Gets an 8.8-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster and more
  • Powered by a 184hp electric motor

Mini Cooper SE: exterior

It’s important to note that India is getting the facelifted version of the Cooper SE. In terms of design, all traditional elements of the Cooper’s design, like the round LED headlamps, the Union Jack-themed LED tail-lamps and that familiar silhouette, have all been retained.

There are, however, some key differentiators like the larger blanked-out front grille, a slightly re-profiled front bumper, a redesigned rear bumper, the absence of exhaust pipes, and the bright yellow accents on the mirror caps and wheels. Speaking of which, the distinctive 17-inch wheel design on the Cooper SE is made to look like a British plug-socket. It also sits 15mm higher than the combustion-engined model to allow clearance for the battery pack.

The Cooper SE is available in four colours in India – White Silver, Midnight Black, Moonwalk Grey and British Racing Green.

Mini Cooper SE: interior and features

The SE’s overall dashboard design is similar to the standard Cooper hatchback, but a key highlight is the new 5.5-inch digital instrument cluster, with the Cooper SE being the first Mini to be equipped with one. The only other difference is a new toggle switch on the centre console for the multi-level brake-regeneration system, while the bright yellow accents have been carried over to the interior as well. Mini claims the interior and boot space remain largely unaffected by the new powertrain.

In terms of features, the Cooper SE gets an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay compatibility, sports seats, a Harman Kardon audio system, panoramic glass roof, Nappa leather steering wheel and TPMS.

Mini Cooper SE: powertrain, battery and charging

Powering the Cooper SE is an electric motor that produces 184hp and 270Nm of torque, drawing power from a 32.6kWh battery that’s mounted beneath the passenger seat in a T-shape. Power is sent to the front wheels only, resulting in a 0-100kph sprint in 7.3 seconds and a top-speed of 150kph. The Cooper SE also gets four drive modes – Mid, Sport, Green and Green+.

Mini says that the Cooper SE has been optimised to strike a balance between an acceptable city driving range and desired levels of performance, resulting in a WLTP-certified range of up to 270km. The Cooper SE is capable of fast-charging from 0-80 percent in 36 minutes via a 50kW charge point, while a 11kW wall box (provided as standard) can charge it from 0-80 percent in 150 minutes – 210 minutes for a full charge.

Mini is providing a standard warranty of two years with unlimited kilometers on the Cooper SE.

Mini Cooper SE: competition check

As of now, there is no direct rival to the Mini Cooper SE in India in terms of body style or segment. At Rs 47.20 lakh, the Mini Cooper SE sits right in the middle of all other EV's sold in India currently. The Mini EV is Rs 52.30 lakh cheaper than the Mercedes-Benz EQC, which is the next most affordable luxury EV in India at Rs 99.50 lakh. On the other end of the spectrum, however, the Cooper SE is Rs 22.02 lakh more expensive than the MG ZS EV. Other luxury EVs on sale in India include the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tronBMW iX, Audi e-tron GT and the Porsche Taycan.
