Skoda is working on a hot vRS version of its new Kodiaq SUV, which is tipped to stick with pure-petrol power. Regular versions of the Kodiaq were recently revealed with pure-combustion, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options, with the most powerful Kodiaq currently getting a 204hp turbo-petrol engine with AWD.

  1. New Kodiaq vRS global debut expected next year
  2. Will come with 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine
  3. Will get AWD as standard

New Kodiaq vRS could see light of day next year

There is no dedicated performance offering at debut, but as per our sister publication Autocar UK, work is under way to replace the first generation of the Kodiaq vRS which was strong seller for the brand, launching initially with diesel power before switching to the Octavia vRS’s 245hp petrol engine. Company insiders suggest the success of the first Kodiaq vRS has demonstrated the need for a successor, which could be launched as early as 2024.

Skoda's technical development boss Johannes Neft said it would “not necessarily” use a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and hinted that it would be four-wheel drive. This indicates that it will most likely get a 272hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine available in the new Volkswagen Tiguan –  derived from the engine used by the Golf GTI.

That would represent a noticeable power boost over the outgoing vRS and, combined with a traction-boosting 4WD system, should give enough grunt for a 0-100kph time of around 5.5seconds and a top speed nudging 250kph.

Notably, the new Kodiaq is already available with an advanced new Dynamic Chassis Controller system that uses twin-valve dampers to improve cornering performance and stability – this would no doubt be important in a dedicated performance offering. Like the old car, it will be marked out from the standard Kodiaq with a sporty makeover comprising bespoke bumpers, wheel designs and contrasting trim elements, and would build on the themes established by the new Kodiaq Sportline.

It will once again be a relatively niche offering in its field, as a sporting family SUV with the option of seven seats. Expect more details on the new Kodiaq vRS in the coming months as the global debut nears.
