After being spied for the first time in production guise, more details of the all-new Suzuki Jimny and the Jimny Sierra have leaked online. The brochure images show the exteriors, interiors and transmission details of the SUV.
The key differentiating factors between the Jimny and Jimny Sierra are the additional body cladding, wider tyres and slightly different alloy wheels on the latter. If the models stay true to the previous version, then the Jimny will get a smaller 660cc petrol motor (to avail Japanese tax benefits), while the Jimny Sierra is likely to be powered by a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol or a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The images also reveal that an automatic transmission will be on offer.
Further details that can be gleaned from the images are that the SUV is built on a body-on-frame chassis (same as the previous model and the Gypsy) and gets an all-independent, three-link rear suspension.
In terms of design, both get projector headlamps, black bumpers, turn indicators integrated into the outside mirrors, and a rear-mounted spare. An attachment slot below the left outside mirror appears to be for a blind spot detection system.
Images of the interiors of the new Jimny were leaked on the internet late last year, and it revealed that the cabin shares a lot with the new Swift, including the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and climate control system. The steering is also similar and gets the same audio controls but isn’t the flat-bottomed type. Both models also feature rear seats and the front passenger seat that fold flat and a brake assist driving aid.
Suzuki is expected to officially unveil the Jimny for the Japanese market in the first half of July, following which, it will introduce the SUV to other international markets. While there is no official word on whether the Jimny will come to India, it is a viable replacement for the stalwart Gypsy that's been on sale in India since 1985.
