Porsche has set a new record with its Taycan EV at the 20.8km long Nurburgring Nordschleife – it is the fastest four-door, all-electric sedan to have ever gone around the ‘Ring'. The Taycan managed to complete a lap of the Green Hell in just 7min 42sec with Lars Kern, Porsche’s test driver, behind the wheel.
One can’t make a direct comparison to a similar model that has lapped the Nurburgring as the Taycan is the only four-door all-electric vehicle to have recorded a time. However, if we compare it to the current fastest four-door sedan around the Nurburgring – the 2017 Jaguar XE SV Project 8, which lapped the German track in a blistering 7min 18.3sec – the Taycan is 24 seconds slower. It is worth mentioning that the Jag that set the record was equipped with the optional Track Pack, which removes the rear seats and adds a roll cage straight from the factory. The next quickest four-door sedan around the iconic German race track is the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4Matic+ sedan, which did it in 7min 25.4sec, making the Taycan EV 17 seconds slower than the Mercedes.
There have been other all-electric cars that have set lap records at the Nurburgring Nordschleife such as the Volkswagen ID R – which did it in 6min 5.3sec and the Nio EP9 – which recorded a 6min 45.9sec lap time. However, both these cars are not series production models.
The Porsche Taycan’s international debut will take place at the 2019 Frankfurt motor show on September 10. In related news, Porsche also recently completed an endurance test with the Taycan, which saw the EV traverse 3,425km over 24 hours at the Nardò high-speed test track in Italy.
