As Autocar India had revealed earlier, Tata Motors has been working on introducing an electric version of the Tiago, which will be the Indian brand’s first EV on sale.
The UK-based Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Motors, recently announced the date for the reveal of the Tiago EV. The subsidiary commented on the LCV2017 (a low carbon vehicle event scheduled in Millbrook, UK, on September 6-7, 2017) with a post on micro-blogging site Twitter: “Not long until we showcase our Tiago EV! The countdown is on...”
Tata Motors has been working on battery electric vehicles for some time now with TMETC leading the charge in developmental work. The Tiago EV is expected to borrow heavily from the Bolt BEV prototype, the electric version of the Bolt hatchback, which we drove exclusively last year.
It makes sense to use the Tiago as a base as the hatchback’s relatively low-cost platform should help offset some of the costs of the battery and related components.
Besides electric versions of the Nano that are currently being tested near Coimbatore for shared mobility solutions provider Ola, Tata Motors is also testing a fully electric bus for eventual roll-out.
