The second-generation Toyota Innova, named the Innova Crysta, has been awarded an overall safety rating of four stars at the ASEAN NCAP crash test.

The presence of Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is mandatory to score a 5-star safety rating in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP). However, the ASEAN-spec 2016 Toyota Innova sourced from Indonesia does not feature ESC as standard. As a result, the top-end ESC-equipped trim levels scored 14.10 points (out of maximum 16.00) and a 5-star safety rating in AOP.

Meanwhile, the other models in the new Innova range scored a 4-star overall safety rating due to lack of ESC as standard. The car also scored 76 percent in Child Occupant Protection (COP), making it eligible to feature in the 4-star category.

The Toyota Innova Crysta in ‘Z’ trim level shown at the 2016 Auto Expo was listed with airbags, ABS, EBD and brake assist. However, the safety features to be offered as standard in India are yet to be seen.

The 2016 Toyota Innova Crysta is likely to draw power from an all-new 2.4-litre GD diesel engine that produces 147bhp and 34.87kgm when mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. There will also be an Innova Crysta variant with a six-speed automatic gearbox capable of producing 36.70kgm of torque.

Toyota is expected to launch the new Innova Crysta in India sometime this year.
