The Volvo S90 and XC60 are set to be refreshed in the Indian market on October 19. In February last year, the Swedish carmaker had revealed the updated S90 sedan for markets abroad, while the facelifted XC60 SUV made its global debut earlier this year. The refreshed models get some subtle design tweaks, new features and upgraded powertrains.

2021 Volvo S90, XC60: design and feature updates

As part of the facelift, both the sedan and SUV receive some minor styling changes. The S90 gets a new front bumper and fog lights, as well as sequential turn indicators. The XC60, too, gets an updated front fascia, with a new grille and bumper, and plenty of chrome trim. New exterior colour options and alloy wheel designs have also been added for both the models.

Coming to the interiors, the new S90 debuted globally with an ‘Advanced Air Cleaner’ which filters cabin air and displays air quality on the infotainment screen. The system was previously available on only Chinese-spec Volvos. There’s also a new wireless charger, an upgraded Bowers and Wilkins audio system and USB Type-C ports which replace the 12V charging socket for rear passengers.

The XC60 facelift also gets a new, Android-powered infotainment system which allows apps like Google Maps and Spotify to be installed, in an attempt to offer a “smartphone-like” experience. A wireless charger has been added as well.

2021 Volvo S90, XC60: mild-hybrid petrols to replace diesels

In India, the S90 is currently powered by Volvo’s 190hp, 2.0-litre ‘D4’ diesel motor, while the XC60 gets the more potent 235hp, 2.0-litre ‘D5’ diesel mill. An 8-speed automatic gearbox is standard in both models, with the SUV also boasting of all-wheel drive functionality.

However, the facelifts will see a change of heart, with a mild-hybrid petrol set to replace the diesel engines. The refreshed models will be powered by a 2.0-litre, four cylinder turbo-petrol unit, mated to a 48V integrated starter-generator motor. The state of tune of the engine for each model is yet to be confirmed.

2021 Volvo S90, XC60: rivals in India

The outgoing S90 and XC60 are both priced at Rs 60.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and offered in the top-spec Inscription trim. In true Volvo fashion, expect the upgraded models to also be offered in the fully-loaded variants, though prices will likely increase.

The upgraded S90 will go up against the Mercedes-Benz E-class, BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF, which too is slated for a facelift. The XC60, on the other hand, will find competition in the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3 and the upcoming Audi Q5 facelift

Volvo India now offers lifetime warranty for replacement parts

Volvo India recently announced that genuine parts bought and installed at authorised Volvo workshops from October 1 onwards will be covered under a lifetime warranty. This includes the material and labour cost for repair and replacement of the part, in case of a manufacturing defect. This scheme is applicable to only parts purchased after the standard warranty period, and not to those replaced under the regular or extended warranty of the vehicle. Moreover, in case of sale and purchase of a pre-owned Volvo, the ‘lifetime warranty’ is not transferable to the new owner. The company has also clarified that its new scheme doesn’t cover normal wear and tear of parts, consumables, batteries, accessories and “software not associated with hardware replacement”.
