Maruti Swift CNG gets the new Z-series engine

With the Swift CNG, the new Z12E petrol engine gets the CNG treatment for the first time. Maruti says the Swift CNG delivers a healthy 32.85km/kg (ARAI rated) which is six percent more fuel efficient than the outgoing Swift CNG which was powered by the 1.2-litre K-series engine. As before, the Swift CNG is only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

With CNG, the engine produces 69.75hp and 101.8Nm of torque. Like its petrol counterpart, the CNG variants also see a drop in power output from the previous generation model that produced 77hp. Torque, however, is marginally higher on the new model.

The CNG tank setup on the Swift continues to be a single large cylinder in the boot, and not the innovative twin-cylinder setup seen on newer Hyundai and Tata models. As for emissions, Maruti says the new Swift CNG’s Co2 levels are also down by six percent compared to the previous car.

    Maruti Swift CNG features

The entry-level Swift CNG VXi gets features like six airbags, ESC, remote central locking, halogen projector headlamps, 14-inch steel wheels and power windows. The mid-level Swift VXi (O) adds a height adjustable driver’s seat, a 7-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and steering mounted controls, among other.

The Swift ZXi gets a CNG-powered variant for the first time, and comes packed with features like a LED projector headlamps with DRLs, 15-inch alloy wheels, wireless charging, automatic climate control and a rear washer wiper. Maruti says this new high-spec variant has been introduced as customers have been demanding a well-equipped hatchback with a factory fitted CNG kit.

    Maruti Suzuki CNG sales

Maruti has been the biggest carmaker with CNG powered models in India and is targeting yearly sales for six lakh CNG powered passenger cars and SUVs. Last year, the homegrown Indian brand sold around 4.77 lakh CNG cars in India. For the April to August 2024 period, Maruti has sold 2.21 lakh CNG cars, SUVs in our market.

As for the Swift, the earlier-gen car saw 15 percent sales coming from the CNG-powered models. Maruti is anticipating an increased demand for the new Swift CNG, thanks to higher fuel economy and a wider price band. Deliveries for the new Swift CNG will commence by this weekend in Gujarat first, followed by other states. Maruti says Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi are its top 5 markets for CNG model sales. This is followed by the states of Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.
