Maruti has sold over 10 lakh units of the popular tall-boy hatchback since its latest version launched on January 23, 2019. The six-year wholesale data for the Wagon R, which has built a formidable reputation as a spacious, practical, easy-to-live-with hatchback for reasonable money, reveals that in FY2023 alone, it recorded its highest sales of 2,12,340 units in a 12-month period.

    1. Maruti Wagon R was India’s bestselling car for the third fiscal in a row
    2. Continues outselling Brezza, Ertiga, Baleno in April-June 2024 period
    3. Wagon R is currently priced between Rs 6.37 lakh and 8.51 lakh, on-road, Delhi

In FY2024, the Wagon R retained its position as India's top-selling passenger car for the third consecutive fiscal year, with 2,00,177 units sold (-5.73 percent YoY). It constituted 11 percent of Maruti Suzuki's total passenger vehicle sales of 17.5 lakh units. In the first three months of FY2025, the company despatched an estimated 46,312 Wagon Rs, down 15 percent YoY (April-June 2023: 54,618 units). This takes the cumulative sales of the current model to 10,06,413 units, surpassing the million (10 lakh) milestone.

The model's growth story got a fresh charge with the rollout of the latest Wagon R five and a half years ago. Since then, this hatchback has maintained year-on-year growth for four fiscals in a row, although it sold 12,163 units less in FY2024 than FY2023.

Nevertheless, with 46,132 units in April-June 2024, the Wagon R is holding on to its rank as the bestselling Maruti in the ongoing fiscal. It is ahead of the Brezza (44,471 units), Ertiga (43,339 units), Baleno (41,786 units), Dzire (45,307 units) and the Swift (39,909 units).

Of the total 16,07,163 passenger vehicles the company has sold between April 2023-February 2024, the Wagon R accounts for 11 percent, clearly establishing the prominent role it continues to play for the company, despite the mega shift underway to SUVs in the Indian marketplace.

The Wagon R, which is built on Suzuki’s Heartect platform (shared with the Celerio, Swift and Baleno) is available in nine variants, with prices starting from Rs 6.37 lakh for the entry level LXi variant and going up to Rs 8.51 lakh for the top-spec ZXi+ AMT (both prices, on-road Delhi). Maruti offers two engine options – a 68hp, 90Nm 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol, and a more powerful 83hp, 113Nm, 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol. Both have manual and AMT options. The Wagon R 1.0 is also available with a factory-fit CNG kit, and this variant has become a strong growth engine for the model.

The Wagon R was one of the first Maruti Suzuki models to get the CNG treatment back in March 2010 and remains among the bestselling CNG models for the company. Since then, Maruti has expanded its CNG car and SUV portfolio to 13 models (Alto K10, Baleno, Brezza, Celerio, Dzire, Eeco, Ertiga, Grand Vitara, S Presso, Swift, Wagon R, XL6 and the Fronx) and has a vice-like grip on the CNG passenger vehicle market.

On the CNG retail sales front, between January-June 2024, Maruti Suzuki has sold 1,59,031 CNG PVs, up 34 percent (H1 2023: 1,18,903 units) and 57 percent of its CY2023’s total sales. Expect the Wagon R to have accounted for a major portion of this.
