After drip-feeding teasers for over a week, Mercedes-Benz has launched the G 580 Edition One at Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom, India). Officially known as the Mercedes G 580 with EQ Technology, the electric G-Class will be sold alongside the AMG G 63 facelift (Rs 3.64 crore) in India. Bookings for the G 580 have been open since July 2024 and the SUV is sold out till Q3 2025. Mercedes has confirmed that it will showcase the G 580 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo next week in Delhi.
- The G 580 costs Rs 64 lakh less than the AMG G 63
- G-Turn, G-Steering, off-road crawl are features exclusive to the G 580
- Mercedes claims a range of 473km
Mercedes G 580 exterior design
Its boxy silhouette ensures it looks like a G-Class, the G 450d to be precise. To improve aerodynamics, it gets a partially raised hood with air curtains, a new A-pillar design, a spoiler on the front of the roof and air curtains in the rear wheel-arch flares. LED lights outline the nose giving the EQG a distinct look.
Mercedes claims the drag coefficient has come down to 0.44, compared to the G 450d’s 0.48Cd. Being an EV, the G 580 can be had with a charging cable holder in place of the traditional boot-mounted spare wheel.
Mercedes G 580 interior features
It is very much a G on the inside, too, excluding EV-specific switches. The Mercedes MBUX multimedia system – comprising twin 12.3-inch screens for the driver’s display and touchscreen infotainment – has been carried over. Physical buttons to control heating, ventilation and AC sit below the touchscreen. Mercedes has also added adaptive cruise control.
Controls for going off-road are housed in between the AC vents, and Mercedes calls it Offroad Cockpit. The boot capacity is 555 litres, which is less than the petrol and diesel G-Class, and there's no ‘frunk’ either.
Mercedes G 580 battery, range, performance
This electric G-Class gets the same size battery as the EQS SUV: 116kWh. However, the cells are fitted into a differently shaped pack and stored in between the rails of the ladder frame chassis. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 32 minutes with a fast charger at speeds of up to 200kW, and it has a claimed WLTP range of 473km.
Mercedes has equipped the G-Class with four motors and a two-speed gearbox. The combined power output is 587hp, while torque is rated at 1,164Nm. The 0-100kph sprint comes up in 4.7 seconds and top speed is 180kph.
Mercedes G 580 off road capabilities
While the independent front suspension is retained, a rear rigid axle and virtual mechanical differential locks to offer optimised torque vectoring are new. The G 580 also gets a low-range transmission and an off-road crawl function, reducing speeds to as low as 2kph. Being an EV, water wading capacity is 850mm, 100mm over the standard G-Class.
However, the G 580’s most popular function remains the G-Turn, which allows it to rotate 360 degrees on the spot. There’s a G-Steering feature, too, for reducing the turning circle by pivoting around an individual wheel. Stay tuned to Autocar India for a detailed review of the Mercedes G 580.
